Certain statements can be so simple and plain, but also realistic, truthfully unsettling and carry layers of literary complexity.

It can be paradoxical, ironic, satirical.

It can contain tension powerful enough to disturb the reader and requires understanding above surface level.

An example of such statement is one Jesus made in the parable of the Unjust Steward in Luke 16 v. 8 – "The people of the world are in their generation wiser than the people of the kingdom." 

Halt there.

When you read this line, what is the first meaning it communicates to your mind ?

At first thought, the statement feels contradictory. 

But it doesn't cancel out itself logically, it reveals a deeper truth in an apparently conflicting statement.

You know it's funny how we writers keep scrambling to create compelling narratives while God in His infinite wisdom has already written profound ones into existence.

Shouldn’t the people of the kingdom be wiser?

The literal implication of His statement is "worldly people are better than believers." 

But that's not how we decipher meaning here.

This statement exposes complacency using an uncomfortable contrast.

People who are deeply committed to worldly systems often show more strategic urgency than people who claim eternal purpose.

When you observe how aggressively they pursue temporary things with discipline, urgency and smartness, while the people of the kingdom, even though possessing that which is far more important, pay precious little attention to diligence.

That is what it means.
