I knew the venture was in trouble long before the numbers made it obvious. Our research was strong, the market was real, and the mission mattered. But the way decisions were being made told a different story. Data was treated as a suggestion, not a standard. Shortcuts crept into conversations. The pressure to move faster began to outweigh the responsibility to get it right.

I did not feel fear as much as grief. Something with genuine potential was being compromised from the inside. That realization forced the hardest call of my early career: to step back from a company I had poured myself into, and to do it publicly, with clarity and without blame.

What I underestimated was how deeply that decision would hit my identity. When you have built a reputation across multiple projects, one visible failure can feel like a referendum on everything you have done. The inbox goes quiet. The invitations slow. You start to wonder who you are without the momentum.

That period taught me that emotional recovery is not a luxury; it is operational necessity. I gave myself time to process, to sleep, to move, to talk honestly with a small circle I trusted. Only then could I look at the wreckage with a clear head and ask the questions that mattered: What still has value? What needs to be released completely? Is this a pivot, or a full stop?

From there, I built a simple framework that has guided more than 22 ventures since. First, protect integrity over optics. If the science, product, or promise is being bent to fit a narrative, stop and reset. Second, evaluate risk on three levels: financial, energetic, and ethical. If any one of those is wildly out of balance, the opportunity is not as attractive as it looks. Third, rebuild trust through behavior, not explanation. Stakeholders remember what you ship next, not how elegantly you describe what went wrong.

That first major setback did not end my entrepreneurial path. It rewired it. It forced me to design stronger systems, demand clearer alignment, and treat every failure as data for the next build. The venture collapsed. The lessons did not. And those lessons have quietly underpinned every company I have helped create since.
