VDM Sparks Debate With Controversial Take On Africa’s Development Gap - 2 months ago

Social media commentator VDM has ignited widespread debate after sharing a blunt assessment of Africa’s development, contrasting his experiences in Morocco with those in Nigeria and other parts of the continent.

In a video that quickly went viral, VDM questioned whether Morocco “feels African,” praising its infrastructure, road networks, and public services, which he said resemble Europe. His remarks suggested that visible order and efficient systems shape investor confidence, while poor governance and weak institutions deter growth elsewhere.

Drawing comparisons with countries such as Greece and Australia, VDM argued that development is less about geography and more about systems that work. He described Morocco as functional and investor-friendly, while lamenting what he portrayed as systemic failures in parts of sub-Saharan Africa.

His comments, particularly those linking race to progress provoked sharp reactions online, with critics accusing him of oversimplifying complex historical, political, and economic factors.

Analysts and commentators responding to the video note that Africa’s development disparities stem from a mix of colonial legacies, governance choices, security challenges, and investment climates not race.

They argue that Morocco’s relative stability, long-term infrastructure planning, and tourism-driven reforms offer lessons, while cautioning against sweeping generalizations that risk deepening divisions. The controversy has nonetheless reopened a familiar conversation: what practical reforms can accelerate development across African countries, and how can leaders translate potential into tangible progress?
