Data, Tech & Automation In Daily Operations - 6 days ago

Cloud adoption among African SMEs is accelerating fast, nearly half of companies on the continent have already moved some operations to the cloud, with most planning to go further. At the same time, roughly one in fifteen organizations across Africa is facing a ransomware attempt every week. Almost nobody is talking about these two numbers together.

Most SMEs treat "going digital" and "getting secure" as two separate projects, usually in that order; move to the cloud now, worry about security later, once there's budget for it. But risk doesn't wait for your roadmap. The moment your customer data, your inventory system, or your payment records move online, you've inherited exposure whether or not you've planned for it.

The lesson: Every efficiency gain from automation or digitization opens a corresponding risk door that's not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason to budget for both at the same time. A basic version of this costs very little: two-factor authentication on every business account, one person clearly responsible for backups, and a simple written plan for "what do we do if we lose access to this system tomorrow." You don't need an enterprise security budget. You need someone to have actually asked the question.

The businesses that get hurt worst aren't the ones with the weakest systems; they're the ones who never asked what could go wrong until it already had.

Does your business have a written answer for "what happens if we lose access to our main system tomorrow"?
