Induction is the welcoming into the world of Theatre of newbees. Newbees are the new students who are just admitted. Theatre is a ritual and same time not a ritual, it's a ritual in the sense that it's a ceremony that's to be done for the newborns of the theatre to commemorate their acceptance and welcoming into the world of theatre. The induction ceremony ought to be a celebration of birth just like there's a naming ceremony to be joyful about a new born birth, but in recent times it has been treated as a platform to beat, humiliate and purnish the newborns, it's now seen as a definite platform to pick on whoever has not been in quote loyal to the seniors prior the induction., but no that's not the essence of induction it is to celebrate, to feast with joy. It is also an avenue to introduce the newborns to what is expected of them and what they should expect to see in their journey as thespians. The normal saying for induction is ‘do you have what it takes to see THESPIS’. Thespis was a founding founder of theatre. , we're not discussing that now. In introducing the newborns the induction can be shared into categories of events, firstly the procession, this is when the newborns match together with singing and drumming to the different angles of the school and specific areas where they'll be encountering in their journey as thespians, some key locations include the dance studio, theatre hall, lecture halls and key rehearsal spots. Also via the procession they come across the different tradition and customs in Nigeria via their distinct dances, gods and songs., they're accompanied in their journey to see THESPIS by a Chief Priest and or Priestess. After then they move into the theatre hall or defined location where they are conferred ‘THESPIANS’ and they begin their very first performance on stage. Prior the procession and performance they'll go through a thorough stage of orientation where they're put to know about everything and anything that'll assist their effectiveness and proper behaviour in the theatre space. Theatre Artists are disciplined people and this is evident in the actions of the induction. After the ceremony they are given certificates to seal their thespianic welcoming. They can now bear names like ‘Thespiankome’ etc. The Induction is a sweet bitter experience but it is most bitter when you don't partake in it as it's an experience that can't be under and overemphasized.
