DREAM A RIVER - 12 months ago

The sun had just begun to set, casting a warm orange glow over my small village. I had spent the day lounging by the stream that ran through the center of our village, watching the water flow gently by. As the evening drew in, I decided to take a swim, feeling the cool water envelop me as I dove in.

The stream was narrow, but deep, and I swam against the current, feeling it push back against me. As I swam, I noticed that the water level seemed to be dropping, slowly at first, but then more rapidly. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I realized that I was swimming in water that was barely knee-deep.

Suddenly, my hands touched the sandy bottom of the stream, and I felt a jolt of fear. What was happening? I tried to stand up, but my feet felt heavy, as if they were stuck in the sand. I looked around, but the village was silent and still, the only sound the gentle lapping of the water against the shore.

And then, I saw them. Creatures, unlike any I had ever seen before, emerged from the depths of the stream. They were humanoid in shape, but their skin was a shimmering scales, and their hair flowed like seaweed in the current. They surrounded me, their eyes glowing with an otherworldly light.

I tried to struggle, but they held me fast, their grip like a vice. I felt a sense of panic rising up inside me as they began to speak, their voices like a chorus of whispers in my ear.

"You have been chosen," they said. "You have been chosen to be judged."

I didn't understand what they meant, but I knew that I was in grave danger. I tried to plead with them, to beg for mercy, but they just laughed, their voices echoing off the walls of the stream.

The creatures began to chant, their voices rising and falling in a hypnotic rhythm. I felt myself becoming drowsy, my eyelids growing heavy. I tried to fight it, but it was no use. I was trapped, caught in a web of magic and deceit.

As I drifted off into unconsciousness, I heard their voices, whispering in my ear. "Let the baby go," they said. "Let him go, free him, and don't lay your hands on him again. Let your captive free, let him free forever. Let him enjoy his labor in peace."

I didn't know what they meant, but I knew that I had to escape. I struggled and kicked, but the creatures held me fast. It wasn't until I heard a deep voice, booming like thunder, that they finally released me.

I fell to the ground, gasping for breath. As I looked up, I saw the creatures standing around me, their eyes glowing with an otherworldly light. And then, I saw the baby.

It was a small, helpless thing, lying on the ground. I knew that I had to save it, but as I reached out to take it, the creatures stopped me.

"No," they said. "You cannot have the baby. It is ours, and we will not let it go."

I pleaded with them, but they just laughed. It wasn't until the deep voice spoke again, booming like thunder, that they finally relented.

"Give the baby to him," the voice said. "He has been chosen to save it."

The creatures hesitated, and then one of them handed the baby to me. As soon as I took it, the water in the stream began to flow again, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me.

I stood up, holding the baby close, and began to walk away from the stream. As I looked back, I saw the creatures watching me, their eyes glowing with an otherworldly light.

And then, I woke up.

It took me a moment to realize that it had all been a dream. But as I lay there, catching my breath, I couldn't shake the feeling that it had been real. The creatures, the baby, the stream – it had all seemed so vivid, so real.

I threw off the covers and got out of bed, feeling a sense of unease. What did the dream mean? Was it just a product of my imagination, or was it something more?

As I walked over to the window, I saw that the sun was just starting to rise.
