The Evolution Of Eyewear Trends - 1 month ago

In recent years, minimalism, particularly as seen in the 1990s and early 2000s, has gained significant traction in fashion. This trend extends beyond clothing to encompass accessories, most notably eyewear. The current iteration of this minimalist approach is characterized by sleek, no-frame or wire-frame designs that have emerged as prominent choices for consumers.

Cristina Calciati, a professional in trends and foresight at EssilorLuxottica, which owns brands such as Ray-Ban and Persol, describes this eyewear trend as "an evolution of the quiet luxury wave." She emphasizes its qualities of being minimal, understated, and highly wearable while maintaining attention to detail.

Sofia-Marie Best, also affiliated with EssilorLuxottica, points out that these styles reflect a broader cultural nostalgia, particularly among Gen Z, who are revisiting aesthetics from the '90s and Y2K eras. This resurgence is not just a fleeting moment but part of a larger trend of nostalgic comebacks.

Contemporary brands like Prada and Armani have embraced these minimalist designs, suggesting that the influence of notable figures such as Giorgio Armani may amplify interest in these styles following his recent passing.

This eyewear trend transcends gender, exemplified by actor Jonathan Bailey’s choice of demure wire-rimmed glasses in a recent ‘Jurassic Park’ film. He playfully referred to them as "slutty little glasses" on the red carpet, highlighting how the phrase resonated widely, leading to a collaboration with eyewear brand Cubitts, with proceeds benefiting LGBTQ+ causes.

Bailey's comments reveal a nuanced complexity within this trend: these eyewear styles can evoke a sense of both allure and intellect. They carry connotations reminiscent of studious personas, yet they also possess a hint of flirtation.

In a casual encounter, Renatto Balladares, a concept designer at Gap, shared his perspective on the trend. He described the minimalist look as "streamlined" and "sophisticated," emphasizing the importance of authenticity in styling, cautioning against adopting an overly corporate appearance.

Furthermore, he noted the practical benefits of such eyewear, remarking that they can effectively conceal under-eye bags. This functionality adds to their appeal in a market that has recently seen a shift away from oversized, bold sunglasses, long popularized by celebrities like Charli XCX, toward more minimalist frames.

Calciati observes that while bold plastic frames remain popular with many consumers, there is a growing interest in lighter, more minimalistic styles. Best adds that no-frame designs enhance tinted lenses, which are also gaining popularity, particularly among men.
