CHAPTER 2
The Divine Academy is where Karma works. There consist of four departments: the Saviours, the Healers, the Grim Reapers and the Punishment department. Members of the Academy were from different parts of the world and their leader was Black American. The Academy was a place that was only visible to it's members, with large and bright chandeliers hanging from the roof. The people there were dressed as normal as students in a university. Colourful, dark and all. Jackson and his assistant Tracy walked into a hall and stopped.
“Good morning, President”. Jackson was met by a loud greeting. There were about 20 new recruits all dressed in black suits. He looks around and nods.
“We are all very happy to welcome you to The Divine Academy, as new members”. The recruits all smile a little as he addressed them. About 7 members were standing beside him facing the new recruits. Jackson walks a little closer to them and stops.
“You know your work here and everything else you need to know is in your handbook, so make use of it”. He clears his throat and walks to the side. “So, the only thing I’m going to do is introduce you to our other members here, who would lead you”. He turns to acknowledge the members, then he furrows his brows.
“Where is Karma?” The members look amongst themselves then they shrug. Jackson sighs. That little girl was going to be the death of him. The door opens and everyone’s attention shifts to it. Karma stops at the door when she suddenly sees everyone’s eyes on her.
Karma is Nigerian who from birth was destined to be a Punisher. She is 5'4 feet, with small eyes, not too light not too dark skin, dimples on both sides of her cheeks that never show since she rarely smiles (well they do when she smirks), ageless, but she sometimes claim to be 20. She looks like it, but has definitely lived for a longer time.
She looks at all the new recruits in their eyes till they cast their eyes down. They better, she thought. Her stare was never a normal one, it was more of a glare. She walks and stops when she reaches the president, then she folds her arms.
"I appreciate the fact that you went through great lengths to invite me, but I have work to do. Afterall, I am the only person in charge of the Punishment department which you amazingly decided to be deep, deep, deep", she turns to look at him, "deep down underground". Jackson clears his throat and leans in closer to whisper to her, "We'll talk about that later". She gives him a cold look, but doesn't say anything further. Jackson swallows and turns to the other members.
"These are all our leaders, we call them mentors", Jackson motions to all the members standing beside him as he spoke. As he introduced the leaders and their positions, Karma catches one of the new recruits staring at her. She smirks and the boy cast's his eyes away. "And this is Karma", she heard Jackson say, before she brings back her full attention to the place.
"I don't know what the other leaders said, cause I honestly was not listening, but never call me mentor", Karma says as she looked at each and everyone of them. "You are to call me Karma, whether its to my face, behind my back or anything else".
"Why?" A female recruit asked. "Because when you say the name Karma, the next thing that automatically comes to your mind is a bitch. Then you won't have the guts to disrespect me". She gives them all a look as she said that. "And also because I just don't like being called mentor", she squeezes her face, "it just sounds so....old".
The recruits smile. "You don't gotta worry about my rules or anything, cause as I said, my department happens to be deep, deep, deep", Jackson looks down as she stare at him, "deep down underground". She ends her statement and a lot of recruits were laughing, she wasn't though. Karma continues talking, "Anyways, just don't try to cross my path cause it a very dangerous path that you shouldn't be able to cross except your mentors decide to use you to annoy me". Karma looks at the mentors, then she nods and walks out. "Stop her", Jackson was saying, but he stops when Tracy opened the door, then she shakes her head. Jackson sighs.
"One important thing you all need to note is that Karma has the ability to travel through doors, so you need to say everything you want to say to her before she leaves. When she leaves, you probably won't see her for a month or more". He tells the recruits who start murmuring amongst themselves, wondering just how busy she was. Jackson claps his hands and the place was quiet. "You can all go to the office next door and choose your departments".
"Yes sir". They all replied.
Karma opens a door and appears by the road in New York. It was afternoon and the streets were busy. She looks around for a while before a lady catches her eyes. At the same time, the lady sees Karma and drops what she was holding in shock. Karma raises a brow. The lady looks around in fear and Karma shakes her head. The next second, the lady starts running. Karma sighs and slowly walks toward the direction of the lady. Turning into a corner, she opens a door and appears in front of the lady. The lady falls back in fear, then she looks around.
"How....how," she stammers and was breathing heavily. "How did you get here?". She asks. Karma squats to look at the lady closer.
"If it were someone I was coming to for the first time, I probably would have answered that question". The lady swallows and Karma raises her hand making the lady flinch, but Karma was just trying to clean the dirt from her clothes.
"You shouldn't be scared Kris, after all we are familiar with each other". Kris had slowly started sobbing silently. Karma spoke in a low and calm manner that could be very terrifying. "Why don't you just hand me over to the police?" Kris was crying as she spoke.
"Handing you over to the police is being nice to you. I don't intend to do that". Kris cleans her tears and shifts back a little. "If you had handed me over to the police I would have stopped by now". Karma scoffs in disbelief and stands up. "If I had handed you over to the police, you would have been released the next day or the moment I left". Kris fumbles slowly for something behind her as Karma spoke.
"Besides ", she continues, "people like you would just never change ". Kris stands up gently with her hand behind her and Karma shakes her head.
"Kris, the last time you tried to stab me with a knife, you didn't succeed, so why do you think you will now when I am seeing everything you're doing?" Kris gently opens her hand and a pocket knife falls from it, then she starts laughing like a menace while shaking her head.
"I just killed three children, just three. I did nothing wrong". She takes a step towards Karma and takes a step back while laughing. "They were smiling at me", she stops smiling, "why would they smile at me? I'm not their mother". Karma starts laughing also, but hers had an evil tone to it.
"Exactly why I'm taking you to the mental ward". Kris freezes.
"What?" Then she starts shaking her head.
"No, no, no. Nothing's wrong with me". She takes a step back and tries to run but bumps into Karma. Dragging her hand, Karma drags Kris towards the door in front of them, with Kris struggling to break free from Karma. Karma opens the door with one hand and pushes Kris into the room with the other. She could hear Kris' cry before she closes the door.
"Why didn't you kill her?". Karma turns to see Trey, the Grim Reaper. He was there to collect Kris' soul. "Sometimes, leaving them alive in places they don't like is far worse than death". Without any other word, she walks away.
