On Tuesday the 14th of May, the Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was arrested by the Nigerian police in the Abule Egba area of Lagos. Portable was arrested after a car dealer lodged a complaint, claiming that he had bought a ₦27 million G-Wagon but had only settled ₦13 million, leaving a ₦14 million balance unpaid. Portable had reportedly claimed the vehicle was defective to justify withholding the remaining payment.
In a viral video, Portable was seen scaling a gate in an attempt to evade arrest when officers presented him with a warrant. Another video showed him being forcibly apprehended by four policemen, who handcuffed and carried him into a waiting vehicle. The voice of the car dealer could be heard in the background accusing Portable of issuing threats when she demanded payment of the debt.
As tweeted by Mazi Nathan, “When Skepta had a song with Portable — Skepta financed the ENTIRE song production and ALL royalties and earnings went to Portable. Today, same Portable is getting arrested and disgraced over alleged unpaid debt for his G-Wagon. Money is not his problem, greed and poverty is”.
Comments from online users analyse Portable’s past extravagance and lavish spending, which starkly contrasts with his apparent financial crisis. His current predicament gives room to question his appearance with several notable celebrities including the likes of Skepta, Obi Cubana and Olamide.
One could wonder if this be a case of living large on borrowed time, with the bill now due? We'll have to wait and see how this all turns out only time will tell.
