Fernandes: I Was Sad When Rice Chose Arsenal - 8 hours ago

Bruno Fernandes has revealed he was “really sad” when Declan Rice decided to join Arsenal instead of Manchester United, admitting he had long viewed the England midfielder as an ideal signing for Old Trafford.

Rice has become a driving force in Arsenal’s resurgence since his high-profile move from West Ham United. His influence in midfield has underpinned their push for the Premier League title and a run to the Champions League final, confirming his status as one of the most complete midfielders in the division.

Speaking on JoelBeyaTV’s YouTube channel, Fernandes explained that his admiration for Rice goes beyond what the public sees on the pitch. The pair first became acquainted during training sessions in Portugal’s Algarve region, where Fernandes said Rice’s character impressed him as much as his talent.

“I admire him a lot, first of all as a person,” the Manchester United captain said. “We all knew the qualities he had and I have always said that I thought Rice was a player to play for Man United. I was really sad when he chose to go to Arsenal. I always thought he would be the perfect fit for our club.”

Fernandes highlighted Rice’s professionalism and adaptability, noting how the midfielder has adjusted to a different role under Mikel Arteta. While Rice is not required to post eye-catching numbers in goals and assists, his positional discipline, ball progression and defensive work have been central to Arsenal’s style.

“The way Arsenal play is different from the way we play, so we can’t compare the players,” Fernandes said. “But what we can say is that he has been one of the standout players in the Premier League this season.”

Fernandes himself has enjoyed a prolific campaign, leading the league in assists and earning the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award. He acknowledged that statistical output often shapes such decisions but insisted Rice would have been a worthy winner.

“I am very happy I won it, but if Declan had won this award, it would have been deserved too,” he said. “I think I had a brilliant season, but he is an amazing player. If he had got this award, I would have messaged him and said congratulations, as I did when he reached the Champions League final.”
