“What happened?” I asked Conner as I towered over Summer’s still body. My voice cracked as I spoke but I didn’t bother clearing my throat. “Why is she here in the mansion and not in the hospital?” I asked at once.

“We can’t take her to the hospital.” He replied to me and I almost scoffed, thinking he was referring to money issues.

“What do you mean you can’t take her to the hospital, this is looking very bad,” I said, rather calmly. Maybe I was still in shock. Because even her paralyzed father looked more alive than she was laying right there in front of me.

“It’ll tarnish the family name if it gets out.” He said and I became confused and threw a glance before looking back at her.

“A bodyguard wounded would tarnish the family’s name?” I scoffed ruffling my hair with my hand.

“She was shot… a few times, the police would be involved. We don’t want that especially when you just got here.” he answered, but his words sounded like manipulation to me. I didn’t look at his face. But I became alert and more heartbroken.

“By whom?” the moment the question left my mouth I felt a surge of hatred and anger flood my heart as Barth’s face flashed through my mind. I was forced to look at Conner’s face when his answer was delayed and I felt I was right about who could have done this to her.

“We don’t know yet, but my men are working on it.” He answered confidently.

“Barth was the last person to be with her, what does he have to say about this?” I asked him and he looked away. “Are you hiding something from me?” I added and he looked at me.
