Why I Backed Out Of Politics, Goodluck Jonathan Explains - 3wks ago

As I stand before you today, a former president who has journeyed through the tumultuous landscape of politics, I feel a profound sense of duty drawing me away from the fray of active, partisan politics. My decision to step back is not one of retreat, but rather a passionate commitment to a greater cause, one that champions peace and stability across West Africa through my role with the West African Elders Forum (WAEF).

This gathering in Abuja,a celebration not only of the 10th anniversary of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation but also of my 68th birthday, serves as a poignant reminder of my mission. In this distinguished assembly of former heads of state, we unite under a strict mandate of non-partisanship, a principle I hold dear. It is imperative that we engage in preventive diplomacy, particularly in critical election periods, where the stakes are high and the potential for chaos looms large.

When I say we observe elections, let it be clear: we are not mere spectators. We are proactive guardians of democracy, ready to intervene at the first sign of trouble. My heart beats for this mission, for the people who deserve a fair electoral process free from the specter of crisis. It is a path that I have chosen, one that may disappoint my political allies, but it is a righteous one nonetheless.

I find myself increasingly troubled by the “rascality” that plagues our political landscape. Politics should not resemble a chaotic marketplace; it must be the arena of responsible individuals who understand the gravity of their actions. Unlike professions that demand rigorous training, politics often welcomes the unprepared, and we must change that narrative. We cannot allow our political realm to be defined by the undisciplined; we must elevate it to reflect the nobility it deserves.

The recent kidnapping of approximately 25 girls in Kebbi State is a harrowing reminder of the challenges we face. It echoes the painful memories of the Chibok abduction during my presidency. I grieve for the families affected by this tragedy and implore all of us to pray for their safe return. This is not merely a cry for justice; it is a call to action for all who care about human dignity and safety.

Reflecting on the birth of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, I recall how a conversation with visionary businessman Tony Elumelu sparked the idea after my electoral loss in 2015. Initially, I envisioned a broad approach to tackle various social issues, but I soon realized that my impact could be most profound in the realm of democracy,an area where I have built credibility. My decisions during my presidency, including the historic concession of defeat, were acts of principle that resonated internationally. They were not just personal victories or defeats; they were strides toward solidifying the peaceful transfer of power, a cornerstone of democracy.

Even with my background in environmental protection, I chose to focus my foundation's efforts on democracy and governance. This decision reflects my unwavering belief that a stable political environment is essential for addressing all other issues, including those related to the environment.

As I look back on the last decade of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, I am immensely proud of our achievements. Under the leadership of Ms. Ann Iyonu, we have transformed bold ideas into tangible action, fostering inclusive democratic governance and building peace across Africa. The annual Democracy Dialogue has emerged as a vital platform for addressing the challenges our democracies face, proving that engagement and advocacy can drive real change.

Today, as I navigate the complexities of my post-presidency, I remain steadfast in my commitment to peace and democracy in West Africa. This is not merely a legacy I leave behind; it is a living mission that transcends partisan politics. Together, we will continue to confront the challenges ahead with courage and resolve, for the future of our great continent depends on it.
