Police in Anambra State have arrested a middle-aged man, identified as Tochukwu Nwora, for allegedly defiling and impregnating a 15-year-old girl in Achalla, Awka North Local Government Area.
Operatives attached to the Achalla Divisional Police Headquarters were said to be acting on intelligence about a group of youths suspected of abusing crystal methamphetamine, locally known as Mkpuru Mmiri, around St. Paul’s Secondary School, Achalla. During a raid on the area, officers reportedly found the teenage girl, visibly pregnant, and rescued her from the scene.
Police sources said preliminary investigation indicated that the girl had been repeatedly defiled by several adult men at different locations, including Nando, Nteje, and Achalla. Investigators believe the suspects took advantage of her vulnerable state, luring her with small sums of money before sexually exploiting her.
The police spokesperson in Anambra, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest of Nwora and the rescue of the victim. He said the girl was immediately taken to the Police Hospital in Awka, where she is receiving medical attention, including tests and counselling, as part of efforts to stabilise her and gather forensic evidence.
Ikenga explained that the case has raised serious concerns within the command, not only about the alleged sexual abuse but also about the broader environment that allowed the exploitation to continue across multiple communities.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikoye Orutugu, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough and discreet investigation. Detectives are expected to trace all individuals who may have had unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor and to determine the extent of their involvement.
The Commissioner also directed investigators to probe the role of the girl’s parents or guardians, to establish whether negligence or complicity enabled the abuse. The command stressed that anyone found culpable, whether family members, neighbours, or other adults who failed in their duty of care, would face prosecution.
Police authorities urged residents of Anambra to report suspected cases of child abuse, sexual exploitation, and drug-related activities, assuring that the identity of informants would be protected. They reiterated that the protection of minors remains a priority and that the command will pursue all legal avenues to secure justice for the victim.
