As a 100 level student studying film in the prestigious University of Abuja, my class was assigned the responsibility of representing the Gbagyi culture. This was a fun and educational opportunity for me to learn new things. As a matter of fact, I didn't know about the Gbagyi culture until the task was given.
I went ahead to research the Gbagyi people, and I found that their culture is very unique. They are deeply invested in their roots, remaining focused on pottery, farming, blacksmithing and trading as their occupations. I found that they are very hospitable people and love harmony, which is why they were given the title ‘people of peace’.
However, the day came and the portion of the class that danced wore bright colours and had face paint on, they carried calabashes with firewood in them just like Gbagyi women. The male dancers were covered in charcoal and carried riffles.
Overall, it was a fun experience, it wasn't like anything I had ever experienced before. It was exciting and insightful and it opened up my mind to other cultures and I loved the experience and I'll never forget it.
