The phone rings for a few seconds. He hopes she picks up; she told him she’d go to sleep earlier tonight. It’s been a crazy week at work.
"Hey, what’s up?” She doesn’t sound like someone who’s been asleep.
“Um… I’m good. I called to check up on you. You weren’t looking too good when we left work this evening” He really wants to skip these formalities and go straight to the point.
“Thank you, Louis. I’m fine, I will be. I just need to rest”
“Um… I was wondering whether um…” He didn’t know how to say the words. He had a little too much to drink and he hoped the alcohol would give him the confidence to say what he wanted to say. Something that had been on his mind for eight years.
“What do you want to say, Louis?” She sounds impatient.
“I saw you some days ago with that guy at the bar, you were holding hands. I…” He’s getting there, but she interrupts him.
“Yeah, he’s a friend. If you’re worried about me, then you don’t need to be”
“Would you have sex with him?” That’s it. He finally hit the spot.
“Huh?” She’s evidently shocked. She doesn’t know how to react to that question.
“Yes, would you have sex with him?” The alcohol is clearly doing its job.
“Yes! I would have sex with him. I’m a free woman at 30 years. I don’t think getting laid would be such a bad idea” She’s annoyed at the audacity and she decides to be brutally honest with him.
“Oh… Is that how easy it is for you to move on to another person?”
“Louis, it’s been eight years. Whatever happened that night is over. We’re friends now” She finally understands where this is all coming from.
“You told me we couldn’t work because we’re colleagues, and look who you eventually married, another colleague!” He’s letting it all out. Thank the stars for the alcohol.
“You have a wife and kids. We shouldn’t be talking about this”
“I’ll leave Carmen in less than ten minutes, if you say you want me” The alcohol failed him there. He realized immediately that he messed up, he went overboard.
“Goodnight, Louis” She really needs to sleep.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that, I umm…” The alcohol had let him down.
“Don’t worry about it. I have to go now” She’s no longer annoyed. She just needs to lay her head and relax.
Louis drops the phone and begins to reflect on what he had just done. He really cares about his wife and his kids. He doesn’t know why he would say something like that. Perhaps, his deepest, darkest desires had found expression, aided by the alcohol.
