No Court Order Halts Sachet Alcohol Ban, NAFDAC Says - 5 days ago

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reiterated that there is no court injunction stopping the ongoing enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and small bottles. The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, told media outlets that NAFDAC has not been formally served with any court order to suspend the policy and that enforcement is proceeding under a Senate directive backed by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. She stressed that the measure is rooted in public health concerns, particularly to curb underage access to high-strength alcohol that can be easily concealed and consumed by children.

Adeyeye maintained that the ban is not aimed at crippling businesses, noting that no alcohol company has been shut down and that the restriction applies only to alcohol in sachets and containers below 200 ml — not all alcoholic drinks. She emphasised that protecting vulnerable populations outweighs commercial interests, dismissing claims that the policy sacrifices youth wellbeing for profit. Critics, including some industry and labour groups, have warned of potential job losses and urged broader dialogue, but NAFDAC insists the action is necessary to safeguard children and uphold its regulatory mandate.
