When Archaic Words Make Modern Poems Timeless - 2 days ago

The Beauty of Archaic Words in Modern Literature 2

Why Archaic Words Work Best in Poetry

Archaic words naturally slow reading, and poetry benefits from that pause because the lyrics needs to linger.

A sentence in prose tends to pace quickly, but a line in poetry is given enough musical life to breathe.

Compare:

"I remember you often." – “Oft do I remember thee.”

The second one does not just communicate — it feels like an eternity of remembrance.

This is why archaic diction is best used sparingly in poems now, than in long prose passages.

Another Example:

"What hath ye wrought?

Thy skin holds warmth,

like dusk dew after clouds' tears.

Your colour prevails dusk,

your identity prevails dawn.

Kings rule with your wisdom,

And borrow your mercy for their verdict.

Precious one, I behold thee with delight."

The word 'thy' creates: solemnity and a mythic tone.

Archaic words make poetry feel: timeless, elevated and reflective.

They can turn simple emotion into a ceremonial exaltation.
