A rural community in Nyamandlovu, Matabeleland North, has been left reeling after a family dispute over a funeral policy pamphlet escalated into a deadly confrontation between two brothers, leaving both men dead and villagers struggling for answers.
According to police, the conflict began when one brother brought home a pamphlet advertising a funeral policy scheme. What should have been a routine discussion about end-of-life planning reportedly took a dark turn when the other brother accused him of using the document as a cover to join Satanism, a charge that ignited fear and anger.
Witnesses told investigators that the argument quickly intensified, with harsh words giving way to physical violence. National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said preliminary findings indicate that one of the brothers allegedly grabbed a log and struck the other several times on the head during the altercation. The injured man later left the homestead and sought refuge at a friend’s home, where he was given shelter for the night.
The following day, the situation took a grim turn. The brother who had suffered head injuries was found dead, his condition believed to be linked to the assault. As neighbours and relatives were still processing the news, a second shock followed: the other brother was discovered lifeless under a tree, his body bearing visible bruises.
Police have launched a full investigation to establish the precise sequence of events and the cause of both deaths. Officers are interviewing family members, neighbours and the friend who sheltered the injured brother, while awaiting post-mortem results to clarify how each man died and whether additional factors were involved.
Commissioner Nyathi urged communities to treat disputes with caution and to resist the temptation to resort to violence, particularly when accusations involve sensitive issues such as religion or alleged occult practices. He appealed for dialogue, mediation and the use of community leaders or law enforcement to defuse tensions before they turn deadly.
In Nyamandlovu, the deaths have cast a pall over the area, with residents describing the incident as a tragic example of how suspicion and misunderstanding can spiral out of control. What began as a discussion over a funeral policy pamphlet has ended with two brothers gone, a family shattered and a community searching for lessons in the aftermath of senseless loss.
