Vacations were a norm for the nwafor's family whose lineage came from riches and staggering wealth that has been passed on from generations. It was just another day for their normal VAY-KAY but this time, they chose THE FOOD BASKET OF THE NATION(BENUE).
Being the only teen amongst her adult siblings, aunties and uncles, Rebecca was socially positive about the trip. Behind her excitement was a dream to visit the Popular GONGOLA RIVER known for its beauty and charm.
When the family arrived Benue, they already booked a motel with servants at their beck and call. In the midst of the partying was Rebecca who kept asking the family to go visit the Gongola. How she got to know about the River was a shock to everyone.
Off course her offer came with a loud decline. Bent in sadness and tears filling those moon eyes, Rebecca had to try one trick, but this time on someone she knew would make her wish come true, her Eldest brother, Roman who always did anything to make her happy.
One evening, Roman had planned to go see a lady he had been texting on facebook but as he was about leaving, he ran into his darling sweet little sister who came up with the idea they both go together to see his friend and from there go to the Gongola River. Knowing the implications of carrying her along, he turned her suggestion down but her persuasions had the better of him. Rebecca swore never to tell a soul about their arrangement.
With Rebecca's presence, there was little to discuss between Roman and his friend. In fustration, Roman gulped his glass of whiskey and waved goodbye to his friend.
It was 6:47pm and Roman told Rebecca that they must head back to the motel. Hearing the update from her brother, Rebecca fell on the ground and wept like a widow. Roman was livid and at the same time tipsy. The whiskey had kicked in.
Eventually, they were at the Gongola. Whoever that has been to benue can tell you about the mysteries that happen at the Gongola at night.
It was quiet and all they both heard were the chirping sounds of the birds and the babbling of the river. On reaching there was an old man with his bucket and stick alongside a young boy about Rebecca's age who seemed to act like a guide.
The man seeing them stretched out his stick and drew a symbol on the ground and walked. Rebecca ran towards the little boy and tried to be funny but the boy wishpered "THEY'RE HERE" THEY'LL TAKE YOU" GO HOME". That was a cringy moment for Rebbeca but who cares, she was living her dream.
She requested her brother come play with her at the river banks but he was already drunk and layed on the sharp sand. Quickly, rebecca reached to his pockets and grabbed his phone to take pictures. It was early already but still dark, Roman was up as a result of his ringing tone. Calls had been coming in repeatedly. He reached to his pockets and couldn't get a hold of his phone. Shocked and suprised, he quickly got up and found out he had been laying on the ground. He kept hearing his phone ring and traced the sound amidst his staggering steps. Hurriedly he picked and voices of family members poured in like rain. He quickly covered up "I'M FINE" he said. Immediately, the big question came "IS REBECCA WITH YOU?
At that moment he remembered all that had happened the previous day. He was mute and shocked. He knew he had to come clean and narrate what had happened.
On hearing that they were at the Gongola, the cleaner who came in whispered in fear "SHE'S GONE". The family looked at her in disgust. Who's gone? The cleaner began narrating the story of a curse that was layed on the village against outsiders who went to the Gongola at dusk. A pregnant woman went missin after going to fetch water at the Gongola and after her disappearance, her mother went to the village square and placed her hands on the soil and uttered a vanishing curse and disappeared. She has not being seen for over two decades. Efforts to reach her turned futile. It was as though she never existed, giving her the nickname “THE WEEPING GHOST”.
It was bright and the Nwafor's sort help from the villagers. The chiefpriest asked to speak with Roman. Roman narrated all he could remember- the old man and the boy was what he repeatedly mentioned. He asked that the strange old man and the boy be summoned but the entire room was mute like they were under a spell. Shaking his head, the chiefpriest spoke stammering "T-hey Co-uldn't T-a-ke You be-cause Y-ou We-re A-sleep" She's gone he uttered.
The Nwafor's promised that they'd reward whosoever that could bring her back but nobody listened rather all they got were sympathies from the villagers.
Days went by and nights passed with no sign of Rebbeca. Her sudden disappearance hit the people of benue differently. Rumors had it that a euphonious voice of a child was heard crooning every market day at the Gongola. Some concluded it was Rebecca’s while some said it was the pregnant woman’s child. The Nwafor's are still in search for Rebecca. Roman blames himself and as a result has been helplessly Enbriated ever since. Rebbeca was gone, and her sudden disappearance remains a mystery.
THE END!
