Money Na Visitor — If You No Host Am Well, E Go Ghost
Is it just me, or is saving money one of the hardest things ever? Because, honestly, I’ve suffered! I’m still working on myself to break free from this “spend as e dey come” lifestyle. I genuinely want to save, like deep down, I want to look at my account and smile for real — not that “screenshot for status” type of smile o.
What pushed me to write this? I heard NYSC people are now getting 77K monthly. Immediately, the first thing that popped into my head wasn’t, “Ah, I go flex die!” or “I’ll finally buy that shoe I’ve been eyeing.” Nope. It was fear. Real fear. I thought to myself — “Wait o, it’s actually possible to serve for one full year, receive 77K every month, and still come out with nothing to show for it?”
That thought shook me.
I started thinking....How can I direct my money to the right places? How can I keep it for the right times? But omo, saving isn’t easy at all. There’s always one need or the other. Sometimes it’s real needs. Other times, it’s just me lying to myself that I “need” something I clearly don’t.
Let’s not lie, that spirit of want is strong. It whispers things like “you deserve it,” “just this once,” “YOLO,”(You Only Live Once) and before you know it, boom — money gone.
There’s this phrase I like saying: “Luxuries last.” It helps sometimes, reminding me that enjoyment can wait. I’ve seen it work for others, but for me? Hmm… let's just say I'm still in training.
So I asked myself: How can we, as youths, actually save? Because savings is not a scam — it’s survival. Money can be like a visitor. If you don’t host it well, it will just ghost you. You’ll even be wondering if it ever entered your account.
I saw one question online:
“If you were given $1 billion to spend in 15 minutes, what would you do?”
The answers were wild — clothes, gadgets, houses. But very few said “I’ll invest” or “I’ll save.”
That’s our reality. We spend before thinking. And when the money finishes, we confidently say our national anthem:
“I’m broke.”
