I just finished watching a movie titled With Difficulty Comes Ease, and I thought I should share my thoughts here.
The film is a drama directed by Korede Azeez and produced by Sheriff Akinola Bakare. It presents an emotional narrative about resilience, grief, and the struggle between personal freedom and cultural or religious expectations. Through its storytelling, the movie explores the lived realities of widows in Northern Nigeria and highlights the emotional journey of a woman trying to rebuild her life after losing her husband.
The story centers on the life of Zainab, a woman who struggled with infertility for six years in her marriage. Just when she finally receives the good news of her pregnancy, tragedy strikes and she loses her husband. After his death, Zainab is required to observe the Islamic mourning period known as Iddah, which means she must stay indoors for a specific period of time.
During this period, she moves into the house of her strict mother-in-law, who constantly reminds her of the cultural expectations placed on her. While dealing with grief, pregnancy, and financial challenges, Zainab begins to question her identity and purpose in life.
As she tries to balance religious expectations, family pressure, and her own dreams, the situation becomes emotionally intense. Along the way, she meets Rayyan, a supportive bank officer who encourages her to rediscover her passion for fashion and regain her independence.
One aspect of the film that stood out to me was the use of language. The characters speak in a simple and culturally grounded way that reflects respect, religious consciousness, and family hierarchy. For instance, the conversations between Zainab and her mother-in-law show how language is used to express authority, tradition, and expectations within the family structure.
The film also portrays Islamic expressions and culturally specific phrases that emphasize the religious environment surrounding the characters.
Another important element is the emotional tone of the dialogue. Zainab often speaks in a soft and reflective manner, which communicates her grief, vulnerability, and hope. Through her speech, we can feel the depth of her pain and her gradual emotional healing.
Overall, the use of language in With Difficulty Comes Ease strengthens the storytelling by making the characters believable and the cultural setting authentic. The dialogue demonstrates how words can reflect cultural values, religious beliefs, and personal emotions, helping the audience connect more deeply with the narrative.
