Nigerians’ hope for cheaper and affordable fuel has been shattered once again. Over the weekend, the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS) also known as petrol was jacked up across filling stations in all parts of the country.

The filling stations (especially MRS) that get their supply from the 650,000 capacity Dangote Refinery in Lagos, have adjusted their prices in line with the new reality.

The Dangote Refinery had suspended sale of PMS in Naira as a result of the failure of the Naira-for-crude policy made by the federal government.

“We wish to inform you that Dangote Petroleum Refinery has temporarily halted the sale of petroleum products in naira. This decision is necessary to avoid a mismatch between our sales proceeds and our crude oil purchase obligations, which are currently denominated in US dollars.

“To date, our sales of petroleum products in naira have exceeded the value of naira-denominated crude we have received. As a result, we must temporarily adjust our sales currency to align with our crude procurement currency,” the refinery had said in a message to marketers.

Nigerians are lamenting, online and offline, about this radical change. And with the soaring cost of living in the country, many may not be able to afford PMS anymore.
