Police in Ondo State have opened a full-scale investigation and rescue operation following the abduction of a prominent community leader, Chief Adeniyi Adelana, Baale of Ode Eriya village in Owo Local Government Area.
Adelana was seized by suspected gunmen who stormed his residence at night, taking advantage of the darkness to carry out the attack. According to police sources, the assailants, believed to be six in number, invaded the compound, overpowered those present and dragged the traditional leader away through a nearby bush path to an unknown location.
The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident and said officers were immediately deployed after a distress call was received. She explained that operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer of B Division, Owo, moved swiftly to the scene to assess the situation and begin tracking the attackers.
Police teams, including tactical and intelligence units, are now combing surrounding forests, bush tracks and suspected escape routes. Security has been reinforced in Ode Eriya and neighbouring communities, with additional patrols and checkpoints introduced to prevent further attacks and to reassure residents.
During the raid on the Baale’s home, the gunmen reportedly opened fire, injuring Adelana’s wife. She sustained a gunshot wound to her right hand and was rushed to a nearby medical facility, where police say she is receiving treatment and responding well to care.
The abduction has heightened anxiety in the Owo axis, an area that has previously experienced security challenges, including isolated cases of kidnapping and armed attacks along rural routes. Community members are said to be fearful but are cooperating with investigators.
The police command has appealed for calm, urging residents to go about their lawful activities while remaining vigilant. Authorities are calling on the public to provide credible information that could help locate the abductors and secure the safe release of the Baale.
Security agencies are also engaging local vigilante groups and traditional leaders in the area to gather intelligence and strengthen community-based surveillance. Police have assured that every available resource is being deployed to rescue Adelana and bring those responsible to justice.
