Trump Cuts Off Trade Talks With Canada After Ad Sparks Fury - 2 months ago

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday night that he is terminating all trade negotiations with Canada, accusing the Ontario government of running a “fraudulent” television advertisement that misused former President Ronald Reagan’s voice to criticize U.S. tariffs. The ad, which quoted Reagan saying tariffs “hurt every American,” was denounced by the Reagan Foundation as being “selective” and edited without permission.

The move ramps up already mounting tensions over the sweeping 35 % tariffs Trump has imposed on Canadian steel, aluminum, and auto imports. Ottawa has begun exploring ways to diversify its trade partnerships beyond the U.S., and Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that Canada would not grant unfair market access if talks collapse.
