Nigeria international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has dismissed growing speculation linking him with a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League, insisting his next move is likely to keep him outside West Africa.
The Super Eagles shot stopper is a free agent after leaving South African club Chippa United, where he requested to terminate his contract. His availability has fuelled debate among fans and pundits, with some urging him to rejoin the domestic league to maintain sharpness and visibility.
Former Nigeria goalkeeper Peterside Idah is among those who have publicly encouraged a short-term NPFL deal, but Nwabali has made it clear that such a move is not his priority. He framed his stance within a wider reality facing West African players, who often look abroad for better-structured competitions and improved financial security.
Nwabali pointed to South Africa, Europe and North Africa as the main targets for ambitious professionals from the region, highlighting the stronger organisation, commercial backing and wage structures in those leagues. In his view, players are unlikely to leave an environment where they are well paid and supported unless there is a clear step up.
The goalkeeper is no stranger to the NPFL, having previously played for Go Round, Wikki Tourists, Enyimba, Lobi Stars and Katsina United. His performances for Chippa United and the Super Eagles have now seen him linked with several clubs abroad, including South African giants Kaizer Chiefs, though he insists that talk of any agreement remains premature.
Nwabali described the transfer chatter as a reflection of his rising profile rather than evidence of concrete negotiations. He welcomed the goodwill behind the rumours but stressed that, for now, they remain just that.
Despite concerns that an extended spell without a club could threaten his place in the national team, Nwabali maintains he is calm about his situation. He says he will only commit when the right project and conditions are presented, and he is not fixated on any particular country or league.
For now, the goalkeeper is content to let the speculation swirl while he quietly assesses his options, promising that his next destination will only be known when he is unveiled in new colours.
