Gaël Clichy has tipped Michael Olise to follow the path of Kylian Mbappé and explode onto the global stage as France’s next World Cup sensation in 2026.
Olise, now a central figure at Bayern Munich, is preparing for his first World Cup with Les Bleus after a rapid rise that has seen him become one of Europe’s most feared wide forwards. For Clichy, who won major honours with Arsenal and Manchester City, the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico could be the moment the 24-year-old moves from highly rated to truly elite.
Clichy drew a direct parallel with Mbappé’s impact in Russia, when the then-teenager transformed from prodigy to global superstar with a series of electrifying performances that powered France to the title.
“We knew Mbappé was a special talent before 2018, but that World Cup was when he truly arrived,” Clichy said. “I hope Michael can do something similar this summer.”
Despite his prominence at Bayern, Olise is still relatively new at senior international level, with only 16 caps so far. His integration into Didier Deschamps’ squad has been gradual, but those who have worked closely with him insist his ceiling is far higher than he has yet shown in a France shirt.
Clichy had a front-row seat to Olise’s development during the Paris Olympics, where he served as Thierry Henry’s assistant with the Under-23 side. France reached the final and claimed silver, with Olise a constant creative spark and one of the standout performers of the tournament.
“I know how good he is and what a top person he is as well,” Clichy said. “If he brings the same level he has shown for Bayern Munich, then people will see he is one of the very best players France has.”
Clichy also pointed to Rayan Cherki as another potential game-changer for France in 2026. The gifted playmaker, who was also part of the Olympic squad, has built a reputation for flair, vision and two-footed creativity.
With Mbappé established as the face of the team and emerging talents like Olise and Cherki pushing hard behind him, France appear well stocked to mount another serious challenge for World Cup glory.
