Nigeria is taking bold steps toward cleaner transportation by leading Africa’s electric vehicle (EV) assembly movement. In Lagos, a company known as SAGLEV has begun assembling 18-seater electric vans locally using kits from Dongfeng Motor Corporation. Instead of simply importing fully built vehicles, Nigeria is now participating in the production process — a move that strengthens local manufacturing, creates jobs, and reduces dependence on fuel-powered transport.
This shift comes at an important time. With rising fuel costs and growing environmental concerns, electric vans offer a cheaper and cleaner alternative for public transportation. Plans are also underway to support the vehicles with solar-powered charging stations, helping to tackle Nigeria’s electricity challenges while promoting sustainable energy use. It’s not just about innovation — it’s about creating practical solutions that fit Nigeria’s reality.
Interestingly, the EV movement is also reaching academic spaces. At the University of Lagos, there have been initiatives showcasing locally developed electric vehicles, highlighting how research and engineering students are contributing to green technology. Together, industry and academia are driving Nigeria toward a future where science, technology, and sustainability work hand in hand on our roads.
