We’re Now Ready To Win The Champions League — Simeone - 8 hours ago

Diego Simeone believes Atletico Madrid have finally grown into a team capable of conquering Europe, declaring his side “ready” to win the UEFA Champions League after eliminating Barcelona to reach the semi-finals.

Atletico lost the quarter-final second leg 2-1 in Madrid, but their disciplined 2-0 victory at Camp Nou in the first leg secured a 3-2 aggregate triumph and a place among the last four. For a club that has long lived in the shadow of Europe’s traditional giants, the result felt like another step in a long, stubborn climb.

Atletico will face the winner of the tie between Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals, and Simeone made it clear his players will approach the challenge with conviction rather than caution.

“We’ll go into it with all our hope, with total belief. We know the strengths we have and our flaws. We’re ready. We’re going to go after what we’ve been chasing for many years,” he said, underlining a sense of maturity and resilience that has come to define his tenure.

Simeone has already taken Atletico to the brink of European glory twice. In 2014 and 2016, his side reached the Champions League final, only to suffer agonising defeats to city rivals Real Madrid. Those nights, etched into the club’s collective memory, have shaped the identity of the current squad: hardened, wary, but unbroken.

The Argentine coach reflected on the length and evolution of his reign, noting how often the team has had to be rebuilt while maintaining its competitive edge.

“It’s been fourteen years now at the helm, it still excites me to see that the team keeps competing,” he said. “The players have changed, we’ve had to start over a bunch of times, and here we are again among the four best teams in Europe.”

Atletico’s last appearance in the semi-finals came in 2017, another era in footballing terms. Yet the core principles remain: defensive organisation, relentless work without the ball, and a fierce collective spirit. Now, with Barcelona dispatched and another semi-final looming, Simeone senses that the scars of past failures may finally serve as the foundation for a long-awaited European crown.
