Parental failure refers to the inability of parents to provide proper care, guidance, discipline, emotional support, and basic needs necessary for the healthy development of their children. This problem often results in poor academic performance, low self-esteem, exposure to negative peer influence, youth restiveness, involvement in crime, and broken family relationships.
In Benue State, parental failure has become a serious social challenge that has affected many families and communities. Children who grow up without proper parental guidance often lack direction in life and struggle academically and socially. This has contributed to rising cases of unemployment, poverty, and youth-related social vices, which continue to slow down community development.
Among the Tiv-speaking ethnic group in Benue State, the problem is also noticeable, as some parents fail to properly supervise and guide their children. This has led to a situation where some youths grow up without strong moral values, making them vulnerable to negative influences and reducing their ability to contribute positively to society.
To address these challenges, Tiv parents need to be more intentional in child upbringing by spending quality time with their children, providing moral instruction, and maintaining open communication within the home. Community leaders, schools, and religious institutions should also support parents through moral education and counseling programs.
In conclusion, although parental failure has affected families in Benue State, especially among the Tiv people, it can be reduced through responsible parenting, stronger family bonds, and community support systems.
