“POV: “AFAMEFUNA ;AN NWA BOI STORY” THROUGH VIDA’S EYES” - 3 days ago

The air was thick with the smell of rain and the promise of something new which for me is Anyanwu Sandra  Adaora’s storyline for the movie “AFAMEFUNA”

The story “AFAMEFUNA” explores a bit of the Igbo tradition, mainly the Igbo Apprenticeship system(IAS) others including the igbo indigenous language, costumes, and culture amongst many others.

This Igbo Apprenticeship System was reviewed by the”Harvard Business Review” to be a working system known as “Stakeholder Capitalism”which promotes equality and peaceful coexistence between traders, as it is also recognized as the largest business incubator in the world. This Igbo Apprenticeship System entails an individual known as “NWA BOI” serving a trader whilst learning the trade and at either an agreed period by both parties(the Nwa boi and the trader) or a period most suitable to the trader, the trader settles the Nwa boi with a place where he can trade for himself independently,  alongside a start up capital. Afamefuna himself is an Nwa boy who’s story highlights obedience, perseverance and diligence. These attributes helps Afam as his rise was faster than expected

The Film“AFAMEFUNA” employs a Non-linear storytelling narrative structure, as the film frequently employs elements like flashbacks and shifts in perspectives which in my own point of view showcases Anyanwu’s and Kayode kasum’s deliberate attempt to disorient and confuse its viewers.

The Films cinematography is also characterized by the directors use of close up shots and hand held camera movements which helped me to connect more emotionally to the film.

More importantly,I feel the weight of showcasing the Igbo culture and traditions was embedded in the sound design. Asides through the visuals of the film which showcased the Igbo traditions which includes the Igbo culture of celebrations, the Igbo masquerades popularly known as “Mmanwu” or “Egwu”, the native cola used by the igbos for blessings, ceremonies and rituals known as the”oji Igbo”, and many others. The sound design emphasized the Igbo culture through the use of the Igbo indigenous language, the Igbo traditional sound produced by playing the Ogene(a metal gong),the Igba(a cylinder drum),the Ekwe(a slit drum),the Udu(a pottery drum),and the Oja (a flute). These were the highlights of the Igbo culture in the film in my own opinion.

In conclusion ,“AFAMEFUNA: AN NWA BOI STORY”” is a culturally rich film that offers a compelling glimpse into the Igbo culture, beautifully portraying the complexities of traditions and the resilience of its people. Through its storytelling,”AFAMEFUNA” not only entertains but also educates, leaving its viewers with a deeper appreciation for the Igbo heritage. Overall, as for the film I’d give it an 8/10 for cultural representation but as for its plot execution I’d let you decide what you think about it.
