I’ve always loved arts. As a kid, I would draw in the sand. Give me a pencil and a paper, I draw about anything and everything but mostly, cartoon characters. Something about animations, vector illustrations and graphics always fascinated me.
Fresh out of High School, I was working in a printing press as a secretary. Watching the Graphic Designers go at it, I would marvel at how they did it. To me it was magic, I always wondered if I would ever be able to.
I was able to go for computer training where the basics were taught. I remember staying back after school to practice; I didn’t have a PC yet.
I was working in a café and I seemed to have enough free time on my hands. Covid-19 struck and the world was plunged into stillness. Then came the great lockdown of 2020. I was in front of my system idly. Watching movies was my usual routine but I had exhausted my watch list. I was bored.
Solomon had taught me the basics of creating vector illustrations using CorelDraw in computer school the previous year. He said the tracing would take days to finish, that was all the discouragement I needed to leave it be. This time around, I thought, what the heck? I have time; let me give it a go.
My first took me 2 days to finish, it wasn’t perfect but I love how it came out.
I decided to make one everyone day if I could. I continued and as time went by, the not-so perfect began to resemble something. I kept at it.
2 days became a day and a day soon became some hours or less. During the lockdown, businesses weren’t allowed to open but I would sneak to work and lock myself in the office to practice. I kept going at it.
I made my first piece on this day in 2020. 3 years later, I can say progress has been made. I might not be there yet but I have moved from where I was. Looking back at the first one I ever made and my recent ones, the difference is clear.
The principle of consistency remains and it is applicable to all aspects of life. The more you do something; it eventually becomes a part of you. Practice makes perfect, the goal is to keep growing. Pick a niche, stick with it and be better at it.
I read my first piece here and omo I laughed but I noticed how I have improved over time. Consistency will do this.
“Let your best one be your next one”.
Challenge yourself and acknowledge those milestones no matter how little as you progress.
A rolling stone gathers no moss and I agree.
Well for me, I am still Rolling stone.
What about you?
