Pillars, Remo Clash In Relegation Battle - 1wk ago

Kano Pillars and defending Nigeria Premier Football League champions Remo Stars face a defining test of character in Kano as both clubs, more accustomed to title talk than survival arithmetic, collide in a tense relegation scrap at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

Separated by a single point after 24 matches, the stakes are stark. Remo Stars, champions less than a year ago, sit 18th on 26 points, while four-time champions Pillars trail just behind in 19th with 25 points. For two clubs that entered the season with ambitions of continental football, the reality of a relegation fight has been jarring.

Remo’s collapse has been one of the stories of the campaign. The Sky Blues Stars stormed to the title with 71 points last season, losing only nine matches. This term, they have already suffered 14 defeats with 14 games still to play, a regression underlined by a fragile defence and misfiring attack. They have conceded 30 goals and scored only 22, are winless in four league outings, and have failed to keep a clean sheet in that stretch. In six of their last seven matches, they have fallen behind first, often chasing games they lack the confidence to rescue.

Suspension rules out defender Fabian Nworie, further weakening a back line already under scrutiny. The pressure on the champions is intense, with supporters demanding a response that matches the club’s reputation for planning and professionalism.

Pillars, meanwhile, are wrestling with their own crisis of form. A 2–0 defeat to Rangers in Enugu exposed what technical adviser Muhammed Babaganaru described as “tactical indiscipline,” but he has publicly maintained that the club will avoid the drop. His message to the squad has been one of focus and hard work, insisting that the battle for survival remains in their hands, particularly with home fixtures like this one.

Recent history between the sides tilts slightly toward Remo Stars. They have won four of the last five league meetings, including a narrow 1–0 victory in November, and have scored first in four of those encounters. Pillars have managed just one win in that sequence and have not kept a clean sheet against the champions in their last six clashes.

This time, however, the narrative is less about bragging rights and more about survival. For both clubs, victory in Kano would be more than three points; it would be a statement that their season, and their status in the top flight, can still be salvaged.
