Media personality and influencer Ifedayo Agoro has set social media buzzing after boldly declaring that she refused to kneel while feeding her husband cake at their wedding, openly challenging a long-standing Nigerian wedding tradition.
On the show Middle Ground with Frank and Ife, Agoro, seated right next to her husband and co-host Frank, revisited their wedding day and proudly admitted that although she fed him cake, she flat-out refused to kneel, insisting the act did not match her personal values.
“I fed you cake during our wedding, but I just didn’t kneel down,” she told Frank on air, using their marriage as a public example of how couples can tweak tradition to suit their preferences.
Frank, on the other hand, played the role of cultural defender, spelling out what many see as the “real” meaning behind the kneeling ritual. He argued that it is not just for pictures, but a symbolic lesson in how a bride is expected to treat and respect her husband once she enters his home.
He explained that in many Nigerian cultures, the bride kneeling to feed the groom is seen as a sign that she understands her role and is ready to follow tradition, insisting that this is how things have always been done and should continue.
Agoro pushed back, making it clear she was not interested in what she viewed as a performance. For her, kneeling at the wedding would have been fake, a show for the crowd rather than a genuine act of respect.
She stressed that she did not want to suddenly start kneeling on her wedding day when it is not something she does in her everyday life, calling it hypocrisy to pretend otherwise just to satisfy cultural expectations.
The clash between the couple’s views has quickly turned into a wider online battle, with viewers sharply divided. Some are backing Frank and defending the kneeling tradition as a harmless and important symbol of respect, while others are rallying behind Agoro, insisting that no woman should be pressured into kneeling if it does not reflect who she really is.
As the debate rages, one thing is clear: Agoro’s refusal to kneel has turned a simple wedding moment into a full-blown culture war over what respect, marriage, and tradition should look like in modern Nigeria.
