The media has become digital, making things much easier for users. A lot of people rely on social media for information, entertainment, and more. Women, who make up a large part of social media users, face unique challenges online. Cyberbullying is a growing concern globally, affecting both men and women, but especially women.
Cyberbullying is a repeated behaviour aimed at scaring, shaming, or angering those who are targeted online. Almost all women on social media are affected in one way or another. Some are even sexually harassed in their DM’s which is one of the worst bullying women faced online.
It is worth knowing that cyberbullying have a negative impact on its victims, by affecting their social media experience and daily lives. It can cause mental effects like feeling upset, embarrassed, or easily angered. Emotional effects include feeling ashamed or losing interest in things you love. Whereas physical effect can include tiredness, loss of sleep, or symptoms like stomach aches and headaches.
If women continue to suffer in silence from cyberbullies, effort to empower them and promote girl-child education may not be as effective. The women being encouraged to speak out are the same ones being bullied online.
To the women going through this: don’t let the bullies discourage you and make you feel low and unimportant. Stay strong, focused and determined. If you overcome the bullies your success will pave the way for other women folk and the society in general.
To the bullies: remember the saying that what goes around comes around. It shows the level of toxicity, anger, and hatred within you which will do you more harm than good.
