On Tuesday, I wrote my last major paper. The last paper is GST and it’s on June 8th so ample time to relax before I dive into reading again. The happiest group this week are the FYB (Final Year Brethrens) writing their last papers and signing out. For most of them, the 4 years was a 6 years journey brought about by the covid pandemic and majorly the incessant strikes over the years.💔
From the gate, you could see them with faces all lit with smiles and glee dressed in their white shirts beckoning on fellow jossites to sign on their white (a common tradition over the years). This would serve as memorabilia for the academic journey. It wasn’t an easy one but they made it through at last. We are happy for them and wished we were them. (The school knows how serve students premium shege o)💯
The school environment was packed full with activities from monday to saturday: the joyful graduands, their friends, family and well-wishers who joined to celebrate them with food and drinks, taking pictures and the tradition was every faculty or department would go round the school blasting music and dancing as a sort of last salute to the institution.
Some people took it extreme and they were quite exuberant in their celebration. Cars doing drift stunts, students hanging out of car windows and all that. A student fell off hanging on one of the windows luckily she didn’t sustain any major injury or worst, the tale would have been different; Student dies on day of graduation instead of Joyful celebration as Unijos marks another signing off.
Around the hostel, some undergraduates were waiting at the junction armed with buckets of water to give the “people in white” a proper send-forth baptism with water. Graduates were running but to no avail, one guy chased this lady, she ran as if it was death chasing her. He was relentless and they went for miles until she gave up and accepted her fate. Baptized she was. The baptism was a must o, nobody escapes (it was tradition). When my time comes, they won’t see me o.😁😌
The celebrations were quite colorful. The air was filled with music; the graduates came out in style displaying different dance moves as they moved around campus. Every department had a dresscode; some made matching hoodies, some had jackets, some made customized t-shirts and it was truly a beautiful event.
We all ganged up to wish our favourite “seniors” good luck and Godspeed ahead.
Our time is coming soon too. We will paint this campus red I tell you.
