There’s always that one family, visitor, friend or whoever it is that’s always coming to visit. They’re constantly in your house whether you want them there or not, and everyone just tries to tolerate their presence and smile and laugh along like we all like ourselves.
The most annoying thing about these kind of people is that they never know when to leave. EVER.
Sometimes they come in the morning and remain in your space till evening time, and what can you do? You want them gone, but you can’t just tell them to up and leave. That’ll be rude.
But there are sometimes when you’re up to your neck in irritation and you’ve tolerated more than enough for a lifetime. That’s when we start doing things that would be considered rude and inconsiderate. It’s normal for young and single people to do that.
On the other hand, when we start seeing our parents doing the same thing and taking it a bit further, it’s like ‘Wow. I didn’t know you had it in you.”
My mother had a former student that was always coming to see her. Whether it was because he had a crush on her when he was little or because he was simply grateful for her teaching, I don’t know. This man was always just in our house.
She put up with him pretty well. Never complained, always smiling even though I could see that she just wanted to end whatever conversation they were having.
My big brother, Jesse, never even tried to hide his dislike for our regular visitor, and even he was surprised by my mother’s actions that day.
As usual, her ex student came to ‘greet’ in the morning and remained in our house till past three. It was a Friday and we were supposed to be enjoying our weekend.
While the two of them were discussing in the living room, I was sitting in the dining, ‘pressing my phone’ and only half involved in their conversation.
All of a sudden, I heard my mum stand up and say “Well, we have to start getting ready for church.”
I looked up, a bit surprised because we hardly go to church on Fridays. I didn’t complain though.
So with gladness in my heart, I got up to start getting ready. A few minutes later, I heard the visitor say his goodbyes as the gate was shut behind him.
At this time, I was already dressed and ready to go to the house of the Lord. I came out of my room and imagine my surprise when I was the only one dressed up.
My brother was lying comfortably on the couch, watching an anime, and my mother was seated at the dining eating a snack.
“Are we not going to church again?” I asked.
Jesse laughed but didn’t answer me.
“We’re not going anywhere. I just wanted that man to go.” My mom replied taking a bite out of her cake.
For a few minutes I just stood there.
Did my mom really just lie? I couldn’t believe it. Not only did she not tell the truth, but she used the church to cover up.
In that instant, my respect for my mother increased significantly.
I went back inside to change into house clothes and enjoy the rest of my weekend.
