I Apologize For Joining Barcelona — Griezmann Begs Atletico Fans In Emotional Farewell - 2 days ago

Antoine Griezmann drew the curtain on a defining chapter of his career with an emotional farewell to Atletico Madrid supporters, asking once more for forgiveness over his controversial move to Barcelona and thanking the club that turned him into a global star.

After his final home appearance at the Metropolitano, the French forward walked back onto the pitch to address a packed stadium, still in full voice after Atletico’s narrow win over Girona. Griezmann, who created the game’s only goal for Ademola Lookman, struggled to contain his emotions as he spoke directly to the stands that had alternately adored and doubted him.

“I know many of you have forgiven me, but some still haven’t, so I apologise again,” he said, voice cracking. “I didn’t realise how much love I had here. I was very young, and I made a mistake. I reconsidered and we did everything to come back here and enjoy it again.”

Griezmann’s relationship with Atletico has been complex and deeply human. Signed from Real Sociedad in 2014 as a promising left winger, he was transformed by Diego Simeone into one of Europe’s most complete forwards. Under the Argentine coach, he evolved into the team’s attacking reference point, combining relentless work rate with clinical finishing and intelligence between the lines.

Across two spells in Madrid, separated by his ill-fated stint at Barcelona, Griezmann amassed 212 goals in 500 appearances, becoming Atletico’s all-time leading scorer. His numbers, however, only tell part of the story. He was the face of Simeone’s second great side, a player who embodied the club’s identity of sacrifice, intensity, and resilience.

On the pitch, he turned to acknowledge those who had shared the journey. “I want to thank all my teammates from 2014 until today,” he said. “It’s incredible to share everything with them. Every battle, every victory, and every defeat.”

He reserved special praise for Simeone, crediting the coach with reshaping both his career and the club’s modern history. While Griezmann missed out on Atletico’s two league titles under the Argentine, he did lift the Europa League in 2018, scoring twice in the final, before winning the World Cup with France that same summer.

Club legends Fernando Torres and Diego Godin joined the tributes, alongside president Enrique Cerezo and Griezmann’s family, as the forward prepared for a new adventure with MLS side Orlando City, leaving behind a legacy that, despite its fractures, has become impossible to ignore.
