My Experience with a Lagos Bus Driver

One day, I boarded a public transport bus heading to Sabo, while everyone else was going to Yaba. Before getting on, I had already agreed on the fare with the driver and knew exactly how much I was supposed to pay.

When I got on the bus stop, I gave him the agreed amount. However, the driver insisted that I still owed him more and refused to give me my change. I calmly reminded him of our agreement, but despite my politeness, he began shouting at me in Yoruba, and it was quite uncomfortable.

What held me back from retaliating was the fact that he was older. I didn’t want to be disrespectful to an elder, and I knew that responding harshly would only create more conflict. Still, I firmly stood my ground and calmly insisted on getting my change. I wanted to remain respectful, but also make sure I was treated fairly. Eventually, after a lot of shouting, he finally gave me my money back.

It was  not a pleasant experience, but it taught me to stand up for myself, especially in public transportation situations where things can get tricky.

That’s my story! I’d love to hear about your own experiences
