Finding a decent and affordable place to live is becoming increasingly difficult for many Nigerians.

For young workers, students, families and people moving to major cities, rent can consume a significant portion of their income. In cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Ibadan, the search for accommodation has become a serious financial challenge.

One major reason is urban population growth. More people are moving into cities in search of jobs, education and better opportunities. As demand for accommodation increases, available housing becomes more expensive.

Land and construction costs also play a major role. Developers have to consider the cost of land, building materials, labour, transportation and other expenses. These costs eventually affect the price tenants and buyers pay.

There is also the problem of housing supply. When the number of people looking for homes grows faster than the number of affordable homes being built, competition increases.

For many young Nigerians, this has changed what independence looks like. Moving out of the family home is no longer simply a matter of finding a job. It requires careful financial planning.

Some people share apartments with friends. Others live far from their workplaces because accommodation closer to the city centre is too expensive. Some remain with their families longer than they originally planned.

The housing problem is therefore more than a real-estate issue. It affects employment, transportation, family life, mental wellbeing and the quality of life people can afford.

A city cannot truly be considered successful simply because it has impressive buildings and expanding businesses. Its residents also need access to housing they can realistically afford.
