Kath Phipps, a lifelong Red from Irlam, began her journey with Manchester United in September 1968 as the club's switchboard operator, shortly after the Reds’ first European Cup triumph.
Over the years, Kath became an iconic presence at Old Trafford, initially as a fixture at the directors’ entrance on matchdays, and later as the training ground receptionist at Carrington, where she always ensured a warm and cheerful welcome to every visitor. In doing so, she touched the lives of countless people within the football community.
News of Kath's passing at the age of 85 was shared with the club’s men’s and women’s players before Thursday's official announcement. Many have paid their tributes to her on social media, with club captains Bruno Fernandes and Maya Le Tissier sharing a video dedicated to her. Other Reds have also written personal posts in her honor.
The Manchester United family is united in paying tribute to Kath, with former player David Beckham posting an emotional message: “Forever in our hearts... The first and last face I would always see was Kath sat at reception at Old Trafford, waiting to give me my tickets for the game. She was the heartbeat of Manchester United—everyone knew who Kath was, and everyone adored her. I moved to Manchester at 15, and Kath promised my mum and dad, ‘I'll look after your boy for you, don’t you worry.’ From that first day to the last day I spent with her, that’s exactly what she did. Old Trafford will never be the same without your smile as we walk through those doors... we love you.”
