Ten years after the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok, Borno State, a new report by the United Nations has revealed that 91 of the victims are still unaccounted for or remain in captivity.
The findings, released by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), followed a confidential mission to Nigeria in December 2023.
The report notes that many of the rescued girls continue to face deep psychological scars, social stigma, and poor access to essential rehabilitation services.
It calls on the Nigerian government to intensify efforts to free the remaining captives, provide long-term support for survivors, and tackle the underlying drivers of mass abductions.
CEDAW stressed that protecting the safety and dignity of women and girls must remain a top priority for Nigeria, especially amid persistent insecurity and violence across the country.
