Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek confirmed on Wednesday that his turbulent four-year tenure at Manchester United has "come to an end." Van de Beek, who joined United from Ajax in 2020 for £34 million ($43 million), has had a challenging time at Old Trafford and is reportedly set to join Spanish side Girona.
During his time with United, the 27-year-old midfielder struggled to make a significant impact, resulting in two loan spells. He spent the second half of last season at German club Eintracht Frankfurt and had a stint with Everton during the 2021-22 campaign. Over his four years at United, Van de Beek made 62 appearances in all competitions and scored just twice, failing to live up to the promising reputation he built at Ajax.
Girona, who will be competing in next season’s Champions League, are believed to be ready to pay around £4 million for Van de Beek. In an emotional farewell message on Instagram, Van de Beek expressed his gratitude to the Manchester United community:
"Dear Manchester United family. Today is a memorable day as my adventure at the club comes to an end. I want to thank you for all your support throughout the years. From the moment we arrived at Manchester United, we felt extremely welcome and we are grateful for that.
Thank you to everyone at the club for making us feel at home. A special thanks to all the fans that made these years unforgettable. Besides the football, the birth of our two children here ensures that Manchester will always have a special place in our hearts. Good luck to everybody, we’ll meet again."
As Van de Beek looks forward to a new chapter with Girona, Manchester United fans and the football community will be watching to see if he can rediscover his form and fulfill his potential in Spain.
