Kenna (1) - 3 months ago

The Lagos traffic was worse than ever today and Kenna just wanted to get home, take off her uncomfortable work clothes  and relax for a couple of hours.

She rubbed her eyes as carefully as she could without smudging her makeup. A red pick-up behind her honked impatiently.

“Madam move na!” The driver yelled out the window. Kenna didn’t even have the energy to respond to him, but it seemed her silence angered him more and he honked at her several more times.

“Oga, what is it now? Where you wan make she go?”  Snapped another driver from the sedan beside Kenna.

The cars were going bumper to bumper for as far as the eye could see down the long bridge connecting the Highlands from the Mainland. It really made one wonder how the angry driver was hoping to escape.

He soon shut his mouth with a few grumbled insults. Kenna didn’t blame him. The heat had a way of messing with your patience and when combined with hours of traffic, it was enough to drive one mental.

Around her, she could hear people turning off their engines and settling down. Everyone knew they would be stuck here for hours. Kenna threw all class to the wind, yanked her wig from her head and tossed it over her shoulder into the passenger seats behind her. She’d already had a long day at the office and couldn’t bear the thought of another hour stuck on the road. Turning on the air conditioning, she tried to distract her already tired mind with other things.

Think of a wonderful thought.

The mantra from her favorite cartoon growing up played in her mind. “Unfortunately, adults don’t have wonderful thoughts.” She sighed bitterly. Having someone waiting for her back home was the only thing she ever looked forward to. She smiled a little at the thought.
