The Silent Pressure: Trying To Have Your Life Figured Out Before 25 - 3wks ago

There’s a quiet pressure that exists in almost every student community, the feeling that you’re running out of time, even when life has barely begun.

You’re in class, but you’re also thinking about internships. You’re studying for exams, but at the back of your mind, you’re worried about what happens after NYSC. You scroll through social media and see someone your age launching a startup, getting engaged, relocating abroad, or “making it” in ways that seem far ahead of where you are.

Suddenly, your degree feels too small. Your efforts feel too slow. Your journey feels late.

Welcome to the timeline anxiety club, where everyone is quietly panicking but loudly pretending to have it all together.

In many Nigerian student spaces, success is no longer something that happens after graduation. It’s something that is expected to start now. You're not just asked, “What are you studying?” but also, “What are you doing on the side?” If you're not running a business, learning tech, applying for scholarships abroad, building a brand, or monetising a skill, it can feel like you're wasting time.

And so, students begin to live in a constant state of comparison.

Comparison with the course mate who already has a remote job. Comparison with the friend who just got a car. Comparison with the influencer who claims to earn six figures monthly from freelancing.

But here’s what we don’t talk about enough: not all progress is visible.

Some students are fighting battles you can’t see financial struggles, family pressure, mental health challenges, academic setbacks while still showing up every day. Some are simply trying to survive the semester without breaking down. And that counts too.

The truth is, life is not a group project. There is no single deadline for success. The idea that you must have everything figured out by 23 or 25 is one of the biggest lies students silently believe.

You’re allowed to learn slowly. You’re allowed to change your mind. You’re allowed to start late. You’re allowed to still be confused.

University is not just a place to prepare for a career  it’s a place to discover yourself beyond expectations, beyond pressure, and beyond timelines created by strangers on the internet.

So the next time you feel like you're falling behind, remember: You are not behind. You are just on a different syllabus.
