Morocco’s national football team is preparing for a critical Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage match against Zambia. Team captain Achraf Hakimi has publicly requested that home supporters refrain from negative behaviors such as whistling or jeering during matches, citing the potential impact on team performance.
Hakimi’s comments follow the team’s recent 1-1 draw with Mali at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, where Moroccan fans expressed dissatisfaction through audible whistles at halftime and after the final whistle. Hakimi addressed the media, emphasizing the need for fan support and respect for opponents, noting that negative reactions from the stands are counterproductive.
Morocco is currently ranked 11th in the FIFA world rankings, the highest among African nations. The team entered the tournament as favorites, following their advancement to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup. Expectations are high, with all group matches being played in Rabat in front of approximately 70,000 spectators. The draw against Mali has increased scrutiny and pressure from supporters.
Hakimi, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, referenced his club experience to highlight the challenges of managing fan expectations. He pointed out that criticism is common even for successful teams, and that unity is essential for continued progress.
The captain also acknowledged the contributions of coach Walid Regragui, crediting him with improving team mentality and performance since the World Cup. Hakimi stated that while playing at home offers certain advantages, it does not guarantee success and emphasized the importance of constructive support from fans.
In Group A, Morocco leads with four points from two matches. Mali and Zambia each have two points, while Comoros has one. The group remains competitive, with advancement to the knockout stages dependent on results from the remaining matches.
Coach Regragui confirmed that Hakimi, who has been recovering from an ankle injury sustained at PSG, is expected to make his first tournament appearance against Zambia. Regragui described Hakimi as a key player for the team.
Morocco’s objective is to leverage home advantage and recent successes to advance in the tournament. The team’s leadership has identified fan support as a critical factor in achieving this goal.
