Love is the fullness of oneself which radiates one's excess of joy and overflowing happiness to the world.
Hence, when one is not in love with himself, he has nothing but sad hollowness that sucks the happiness of others into the bit of his sorrow.
Only when one overflows with joy, can share this love with others . Or else, it is a form of transaction ; as it is business as usual between you and others- (love with expectation).
EXPLANATION:
It looks like an irony that true love starts with loving oneself. Yes, it sounds selfish, but since selfishness is at the core of Human Nature, so no one can dismiss it as unnatural.
At the current Collective level, a human being is midway between an animal a Saint. As such, one's love for oneselfl0 vastly surpasses our love for others. As a species our altruism has not evolved to the stage where we love unconditionally. Even our pet dog fares better than us when it comes to love. At least a dog's love for his master is more sincere and it does not discriminate between a rich or poor owner as long as it is given enough food and shelter. In humans, if the husband doesn't bring home enough money for his wife to buy flour, soon you will have a household without bread and peace as well!
We all have our loved ones, and we like to believe that we love them daily. Ordinarily, it is true that we do feel for those close to us. But the question is: can our love for them withstand the baptism of Fire? Are we sacrificial enough to give up our comfort and even our life to our loved ones without condition? That remains a test.
Rather than say:"I love you but... " or" I love you only if you fulfill my conditions"... because in reality we love ourselves through others. If we are Frank about it, we will admit that our love for others is conditional. I'll give you an example.
