American Army Veteran Fatally Shot In Walmart Parking Dispute Over Space - 5 hours ago

A routine trip to a North Lauderdale Walmart ended in deadly violence when a retired U.S. Army staff sergeant was fatally shot during an argument over a parking space, authorities said.

The victim, 62-year-old Bart Diguglielmo, a New Jersey native who settled in Lauderhill, Florida, was shot in the chest outside the supercenter after a confrontation with a woman in the parking lot. The Broward Sheriff’s Office said the dispute began as a verbal altercation over a parking spot and escalated within minutes.

Investigators said the woman, whose name has not been released, told detectives she fired in self-defense. She remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement as deputies and paramedics responded. Diguglielmo was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Cellphone video circulating online appears to show the final moments before the shooting. In the footage, a woman in a white shirt steps out of her vehicle with a handgun already drawn as Diguglielmo, wearing a gray shirt, approaches. The two stand in an empty parking space, gesturing and pointing at each other as the argument intensifies.

At one point, Diguglielmo raises both hands in the air while the woman keeps the weapon trained on him. The video then shows him following her around a parked vehicle as she backs away, still aiming the gun. A single shot rings out, and Diguglielmo collapses to the asphalt.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as shoppers scrambled for cover and called 911. Several bystanders reported hearing the woman screaming repeatedly after the gunfire as deputies secured the area and taped off the lot for hours.

Family members said Diguglielmo was a decorated veteran who served as a combat nurse, combat medic, and tactical communications expert during Operation Desert Storm. After leaving the military, he worked as a professional nurse before retiring.

His sister, speaking to local media, portrayed him as a gentle, deeply religious man. She said he was a peaceful Christian who devoted his life to caring for others and would never intentionally seek to harm anyone.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate, reviewing witness statements, surveillance footage, and the widely shared cellphone video. Once the initial inquiry is complete, the Broward County State Attorney’s Office will determine whether the shooter’s self-defense claim is supported by Florida law and if criminal charges will be filed.
