Residents of Eruku poured into the streets to welcome back 38 church worshippers, who were recently freed from the clutches of gunmen. This heartwarming homecoming, which happened on Tuesday evening, has been hailed as a monumental moment of relief for a community that has endured too much distress.
These individuals had been held hostage during a special thanksgiving service at Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Oke Isegun on November 18, a terrifying incident that resulted in three tragic deaths and left others injured. Yet, just days before their return, rumors swirled that government officials were still clinging to the narrative of their rescue, leaving many in the community frustrated and anxious.
Dada Sunday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Ekiti Local Government Council Chairman, confirmed the release in a statement, revealing that the worshippers were handed over to Chairman Awelewa Olawale Gabriel in Ilorin by none other than Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
In a performative display of gratitude, Awelewa lauded President Bola Tinubu, Governor AbdulRazaq, and the National Security Adviser, claiming their swift actions made all the difference. “We are grateful for the comprehensive medical care provided to the abductees,” he said, showcasing a commitment to safety that the community desperately needs, especially after the emotional chaos of recent events.
The worshippers arrived back in Eruku around 6:30 PM, greeted by ecstatic celebrations from family and friends who had been on edge during their absence.
The Owa of Eruku also chimed in, expressing appreciation for the joint rescue efforts. He emphasized that the return of the worshippers has lifted a heavy burden from the community, which has been living with constant fear since the attack. “We have not had rest of mind since that day,” he admitted, highlighting the emotional toll on the residents.
This shocking incident has raised alarms about the escalating security threats facing Kwara’s border communities, particularly in the Ekiti Local Government Area. While the community celebrates the return of their loved ones, the reality is that such incidents are becoming all too common, underscoring the urgent need for vigilance and support from authorities.
