Early-Morning Fire at Lagos’ Computer Village Contained to One Building

By Adedoyin Faith Temidayo.

An early-morning fire broke out at Computer Village, the major electronics and tech market in Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday but was contained to just one building, market officials have confirmed.

The incident occurred at a commercial building housing electronics and accessories on Shomoye Osundairo Street, close to Olayeni Bus Stop along Medical Road, prompting concerns on social media due to the high density of shops in the area.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Computer Village Board, Engineer Godwin Enamoh, the blaze was confined to a single structure, despite earlier reports suggesting a larger spread. He clarified that only one building was affected, urging the public to ignore misinformation about multiple buildings being involved.

Market officials reported that about 13 shops inside the affected building were destroyed in the fire, but the full value of the losses is still being calculated.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) arrived at the scene after receiving distress calls, finding active flames and heavy smoke driven by the presence of combustible electronic goods. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police Force joined in the response to secure the area and stop the fire from spreading.

There were no reported deaths, although one firefighter sustained minor injuries and was treated on site. Investigations into what caused the fire are ongoing, and assessments of the damage continue as traders evaluate their losses and plan to restock their businesses.

Computer Village is known as one of Lagos’ busiest electronics markets, and due to the volume of electronic goods stored there, fire risks remain a concern among authorities and traders alike.
