Stellenbosch FC have bolstered their defensive ranks with the capture of Nigerian centre-back Olisa Ndah on a free transfer, handing the former Orlando Pirates defender an 18-month contract.
The move offers a fresh start for the 28-year-old, whose time at Pirates ended after a difficult spell marked by injury and intense competition for places. His contract with the Soweto giants was terminated by mutual agreement, clearing the way for Stellenbosch to move swiftly for a player long regarded as one of the most composed ball-playing defenders in the South African top flight.
Ndah arrived at Pirates from Nigerian champions Akwa United and quickly became a fan favourite, making 81 appearances in all competitions. Tall, calm under pressure and comfortable stepping into midfield, he was central to Pirates’ defensive structure before a fractured tibia halted his momentum. The injury, sustained in a league win over Polokwane City in which he captained the side, sidelined him for both club and country.
His absence coincided with the rise of other centre-backs at Pirates, with Lebone Seema and Nkosinathi Sibisi forming a settled partnership. That shift, combined with Ndah’s lengthy rehabilitation, ultimately opened the door to his departure and subsequent switch to the Cape Winelands.
Stellenbosch see the Nigerian as a key piece in their push to remain among the most competitive and tactically disciplined sides in the Premiership. Club chief executive Rob Benadie described the signing as a targeted move, emphasising Ndah’s experience and the club’s belief that he fits their long-term plan.
Ndah also strengthens an emerging Nigerian core at Stellenbosch. He joins midfielder Ibraheem Jabaar and right-back Kazie Enyinnaya, becoming the third Nigerian currently on the club’s books and the fourth in their history, following winger and forward Stanley Dimgba.
For Ndah, the transfer represents more than a change of shirt. It is a chance to reassert himself after injury and to push back into contention for Nigeria selection, having already earned three caps for the Super Eagles. If he regains full fitness and form, Stellenbosch may have secured one of the most astute defensive signings of the current campaign.
